She was the first Loewenstein Professor of Community Paediatrics at Wits and held this chair from its inception in 1976 to 1997 when she retired from academic practice. He died on 23 August at the age of 91 and is survived by two daughters, Tamar and Petra, a grandson and a granddaughter. He was a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa, the Royal Society of South Africa and of the Royal College of Physicians London. This was the world’s first mother/daughter surrogate pregnancy. He matriculated from Queen’s College in 1951 where he excelled both academically and in sport (rugby being his favourite), finishing school with honours and school colours. He was later awarded his Master’s degree for the dissertation “Academic Education in Architecture.” In 1951 he completed his studies for the postgraduate Diploma in Town Planning. He was awarded the Order of Disa from the provincial government for service to the people of Cape Town. Associate Professor of Law at Rhodes, Graham Glover, described Kerr as “one of the most formidable intellects in the South African legal system” and “one of the country’s leading authorities of the law of contract and customary law”. After 1982, his focus shifted to gold deposits in Chihuahua and Sonora in Northern Mexico, where he spent 15 years as a consulting geologist. Iconic surgeon and former head of Wits surgery, Dr Johannes Albertus (Bert) Myburgh (honorary DSc (Med) 1994), died in hospital in Johannesburg, following a fall, on April 7, 2010. Allan’s twin brother Stanley, a chartered accountant who lived in San Diego, passed away in January 2018. In 1980 he entered the public sector. A Professor of Chemistry at Wits for 30 years, Thomas Arthur Pinfold died of pneumonia on 23 August 2013, aged 82. He held leadership roles at various organisations, serving as chief scientist for the Amphibian Survival Alliance, director of the New Zealand Frog Research Group, co-chair of the Amphibian Specialist Group, which was part of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Species Survival Commission. Accurate calibration of these weirs was obviously necessary. In addition to his passion for the sea, he was a keen philatelist, gifted raconteur and voracious bibliophile. He performed in stage productions and featured on South African radio in his era. Jerrold Turner (Jerry) Steele, a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Finance and Administration of Wits University, was born in Boksburg and went to school at Christian Brothers Colleges in Kimberley and Boksburg. William John Diamond, M.D., world expert in Integrated Medicine, pioneered a new class of patient treatment incorporating Western and Eastern medicine. Wits benefactor Dr Karin Ann Margolius, recipient of the 2010 Order of Australia for services to “clinical forensic medicine, to education, and through support for people with cancer”, died in Perth on 1 September 2010 from ovarian cancer. He is survived by his son Nigel and daughter Phillipa and their families. Theo was diagnosed as diabetic while in his third year of study at Wits. Although Prof Solly’s passing leaves a void in many doctors’ lives, his legacy lives on within us and we will continue to carry the wonderful memories of him and will cherish the time we had together. One of the oldest members of the South African Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Grant led the research in 1966 at the Atomic Energy Corporation (AEC) that made it possible for South Africa to create its own nuclear industry. Frank Wright (BSc 1968) recalls the professor's mandate to make something of a motley bunch of students who were neither architecture fish nor quantity surveying fowl. He was SRC Chairman and a Hutton Memorial Award Scholar. Professor Lynn Gillis (MBBCh 1948, MMed 1956), died aged 96, was founding head in 1962 of the department of psychiatry and mental health at the University of Cape Town and played an integral role in changing the custodial care to a comprehensive service for the region. An excellent academic administrator, Professor Bozzoli was awarded an A-rating by the National Research Foundation (NRF) in 2006, making her the first sociologist in the country to obtain this rigorously peer-reviewed ranking which recognised her as a world leader in her field. After completing her high school studies at the age of 16, she enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand for a Bachelor of Arts degree, which she achieved cum laude. In 1984 Alan entered private practice where he had an extensive alcohol and drug dependence practice as well as an enviable reputation in medico-legal psychiatry, particularly in the fields of workers compensation and veterans. He married Pamela Reardon in 1966 and they had two children. One day he was feeding Susan some form of baby goop (when she was little) and clearly he thought it as vile as she did, so he took the spoon and flicked it across the kitchen to splat on the wall, continuing till the bowl was empty, the wall covered and us apoplectic with laughter. The former executive director of the SA Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD), Aleck Goldberg (BA 1946) died in September, aged 85. He was devoted to his family and leaves his wife and three children. That year she undertook a 3 year Child Psychotherapy training at the renowned Tavistock Clinic in London, which she completed in 1952 . She curated the Seeking Refuge exhibition in association with the Goethe Institute focusing on German-Jewish refugees who settled in Johannesburg in the thirties, and was involved in the establishment of the Johannesburg Holocaust Centre. I knew no-one in London. His immense contributions and humility will not be forgotten. She attended school in Dinokaneng and later went to Fort Hare University where she obtained her social work degree. During this time he graduated, married and worked at Baragwanath and in private practice.
